The Microsoft Xbox 360 Core System. Of the hundreds out there, here are some that are definitely worth considering.
While functions such as watching movies and music and Internet access have to understand that there are literally hundreds more to choose from. RPG fans will love the Xbox 360 video, and they can choose the likes of Mass Effect and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Fans love shooter Call of Duty 4 and Gears of War, while all players love Grand Theft Auto IV and Fallout 3. The library of video games Xbox 360 games and is very large and complete, but additions will be hundreds of games on Xbox Live. You can even get Live Silver, which you can chat with friends online, send and receive voice and text messages, and access Xbox line, including the Premium Xbox 360 system? Perfect Dark Zero (Xbox 360) $4.99 Sequels are big business in the games industry. Once a studio hits on a successful idea, there’s often a lot of pressure from publishers to continue the winning formula. And while some people like to bring out a sequel every year, others spend an age getting just one ready. Rare have spent five and a half years on the sequel to Perfect Dark on the N64. Itself a spiritual sequel to the dearly beloved Goldeneye, Perfect Dark won the hearts of hardened 'Goldenistas' with hugely customisable multiplayer modes and a fun story mode that even supported two player co-operative play. Since then, a sequel has been slated for GameCube; then – following the Microsoft buy-out – for Xbox. With the perfectionists at Rare unable to keep their hands off it, it slipped again to Xbox 360. But perhaps this is a blessing, and Perfect Dark Zero standing proudly shoulder to shoulder with its comrades in the Xbox 360 launch line-up is a stirring sight. The story once again concerns itself with the adventures of svelte lovely Joanna Dark. As is increasingly common in this genre, the game is in fact a prequel to the well-loved original Perfect Dark and tells the story of how she entered the employ of the Carrington Institute as a trusted member of their corporate espionage division. Three years before the events depicted on N64, Joanna embarks on a mission for the first time with her bounty hunter ex-cop father. What follows are 13 episodes that show how Joanna cut her teeth during a particularly fierce flare-up between eternal enemies the Carrington Institute and dataDyne Corp. Get that catsuit nimble feeling of girlyness as you roll and skip round each stage, toting a satisfying array of chunky weaponry. Detractors of the first Perfect Dark said that the graphics were too ambitious – sometimes appearing a muddy mess. That’s not a criticism that the Xbox 360 version is going to face. MotoGP 09/10 (Xbox 360) $12.99 It's time for fans of two-wheeled racing to dust off their virtual leathers – MotoGP 09/10 is here with not one but two seasons for us to race through. Yes, that's two seasons. The game comes with all the '09 season content (tracks, bikes, riders, teams) in the box. The 2010 goodies will be along as DLC, which is good news for racing fans as it means we'll also be getting the new Moto2 bikes – the 600cc class. That also means it will come with the new Silverstone track. And there's more! That also means the new Balaton track out in Hungary, which will feature later on in the season, will be up for grabs. Plenty of new goodies for bike fans to get to grips with. Championship mode is the meat of the game – a recreation of the MotoGP 09/10 season. As you dive in, you can pick your favourite rider and bike from any of the classes (125cc, 250cc, MotoGP – 800cc). With the 250ccs you have to take a bit more care on your throttle control or the back end is likely to slide out a bit more. Further up the scale, the 800cc bike is all about taking great care on the throttle control. The bike can slide out a lot more easily and you really have to pay attention to the state of your tyres. If you're not getting the picture – developer Monumental Games has put a lot of work into the way different classes of bike handle. This year also marks the introduction of the racing line for… we'll say 'less seasoned riders'. That comes from the developers racing the track over and over again, generating the best lap line. If, however, you outdo the dev team, the line will update to your fastest line. That can be uploaded to the network and then downloaded by your friends, so you can show them all how to be the speediest of racers. Career mode is for the more thoughtful racer. In a nutshell it takes you through some of the finer points of management – it's about building your own team, gaining reputation and hiring staff into that team. The game also supports up to twenty players in online multiplayer – a number that the creators claims is a first for racing games. With two seasons and all those features to go at, there's plenty on offer for bike fans in MotoGP 09/10. |

Mafia II (Xbox 360) $12.99 If you're one of those people that like to give friends a lift in your car boot or try to haggle with Argos workers using an offer they can't refuse, then you will probably love playing Mafia II. The sequel to the award-winning Mafia, this game puts you in the dark and shady world of organised crime and family values of another nature entirely. You assume the role of Vito, a downtrodden Italian American who is escaping a life of poverty by joining the Mafia. He soon learns that this is the only viable way for him to change his life around, attain wealth and get respect from others. With his childhood friend Joe, Vito follows the downward spiral that is organised crime and try to prove to the big bosses that they are worth getting 'made.' Just like the game's predecessor, you work your way up the chain of command by taking on low-level jobs such as robbery and stealing cars. As the duo climb further up the ladder and deeper down the rabbit hole, they realise that life as a Mafia thug isn't all guns and roses. Although the main gameplay mechanics remain the same as the original Mafia, in Mafia II 2K Czech has revamped a lot of control and detail, such as vehicular exploration and hand-to-hand combat. You'll be taking part in car chases, gunfights and all manner of other engrossing activities that will ensure that your eyes will be just as widened as Vito's when the story reaches its climax. |

Darksiders (Xbox 360) $12.99 Post-apocalyptic settings seem to be the bread and butter of action/adventure-based games these days. It could be that it's a product of the ambiguous times we live in, but games makers seem to be a little bit obsessed with the End of the World as We Know it. Seldom has there been so literal an embodiment of that mentality as in Darksiders, however. The Apocalypse has happened. We're not talking the nuclear kind, or the alien attack kind or the swine flu kind. We're talking the full-on, biblical four horsemen kind. That's your REAL Apocalypse. Thing is, it's come a bit off schedule. Read: early. War (the horseman) was found at the scene and he's taking the blame for it. Determined to get to the bottom of it all, off he trots to drill down through all the mystery and get to The Truth. When you're War, however, it's not about asking questions and putting the clues together, it's about messing people up with your Great Big Sword. It's about hack-'n'-slash brawling, exploration and puzzling. The action plays out largely as a mixture of brawling and light platforming. Players overcome all manner of undead, demony monsters, and they have quite an arsenal to do it with. For example, you've got chains that might look familiar if you've played God of War. These can be used to not just take out enemies, but to manipulate the environment. There's also the X Blabe, a typically-massive tool that, once thrown, will return to you. It can also pick up environmental effects such as flames. You get the idea. Also up for grabs is an ever-growing array of abilities, such as some ethereal wings that can be used for gliding – helpful for exploration and platforming – and the blade geyser which sees (great big!) pointy things shooting from the ground around War. You're going to need the whole lot, too, because the boss battles are nothing short of epic… On top of all that there's plenty to explore, with huge great sprawling levels littered with physics-based puzzles to bend your head around. So, what's War good for? Darksiders, that's what. |

Bayonetta (Xbox 360) $4.99 Firing up Bayonetta, there's a fairly obvious comparison to be made – it looks a lot like Devil May Cry. While Bayonetta is not the latest DMC game, however, it is the brainchild of Hideki Kamiya, the creator of Devil May Cry. While Bayonetta is set in the same twilight demi-monde as the DMC series, instead of featuring Dante, this new game features a statuesque leather-cum-hair clad witch who carries the same name as the game. Bayonetta is a witch, and she wields the dark arts. The game's story revolves her having been missing for 500 years and then woken up with little memory of who she is. Unfortunately, she's found herself stuck in the middle of a pitched battle between good and evil, and she's on no one's side but her own. Her opponents are angels and heavenly hosts who she has to defeat on a daily basis to avoid being thrust down to hell, so the morality of the storyline is ambiguous to say the least. Bayonetta is, basically, a series of boss battles linked by a series of high-camp cut scenes. There is exploring and collecting items, but not so much that you'll actually notice it. Bayonetta is more about fighting one huge and apparently invincible monster before going on to then battle two of the same monster, with some other smaller monsters thrown in for measure. That, when you get down to it, is what Bayonetta's all about – fast, furious, all-out combat. You wield weapons from a garden-variety samurai sword to a fireball-producing heavenly horn to guns that take the place of your bootheels. When Bayonetta destroys an opponent or deformable set dressing items (plants, benches and the like) she is rewarded with collectible items and golden halos. The latter are the currency of the game, and can be spent in the 'Gates of Hell' bar and shop. Each battle results in a score and a medal. You are rewarded for combos and for not using items. You are penalised for taking damage. If you take too much damage it is possible to lose points in the course of completing a level of the game. Players might complete Bayonetta in a little over 10 hours. But it's unlikely that you'll do so with a very high score, or a collection of platinum level completion statues, so there are bucket-loads of re-playability. There are also five difficulty levels. 'Normal' is challenging, so you'll have to come back prepared and practised to complete it in the most difficult mode. It's also worth noting that there's an ultra-easy setting, which pretty much just requires you to just hit a button from time to time and the game will do the rest, so while this is a decidedly hardcore game in style, it's hugely accessible to newcomers. Even if you do become a grand master of Bayonetta, working your way up through the difficulty levels, this is not a game that is going lose it's visual appeal any time soon. |
